Dave, if you can't find a Kubota loader, I think that the Great Bend GB220 loader will fit. But it's not compatable with a mid-mount mower. Look at www.greatbendmfg.com

Jchambers, I have a 4100 and initially was also looking for a disk. They do make them in sizes that would work for the 4100. BUT, from my research I found out that these smaller, lighter discs are not all that functional and require repeated passes to work. I bought a 52" rototiller instead. This is the answer -it just tears through hard ground like nothing. I normally use a 14" one bottom moldboard plow first, then rototill. As to the aftermarket mower. I assume you're referring to a mid-mount. Woods makes mid-mounts to fit most tractors, but they are not any cheaper than the JD brand, so I don't see any advantage to them. The only way to save money on a mower is to go to a 3 point mower. Those are about 1/3 cheaper than a mid-mount.

I have a 4100, and you price sounds about average. Hope you enjoy this tractor, I do. I agree with Bird -you will be very unhappy with a single axle trailer. Definately go for the double axle.

Steerhog, I use R-4 tires on my JD4100 tractor. I don't have any lawn scuffing problem. But, if I drive across the lawn during spring thaw, I will surely put big ruts in the lawn, so I don't do that. Otherwise during warm summer weather, the R-4's have been fine. Don't get AG tires though if you need to use it on the lawn. A live PTO means that the PTO will not stop turning whenever you push in the clutch. A transmission over-ridden clutch will stop the PTO whenever the clutch is engaged. The 4100 gear model doesn't have a live clutch, but the hydrostat does. Why would anyone buy a gear tractor? Well mine was $2000 less that the hydro model. It is a little less convieniant when mowing around obstacles or anytime you need to change direction while mowing. For mowing large areas, it really makes no difference at all. Is the hydro more handy -yes. Would I like one-yes, but it wasn't worth $2000 to me. I get along fine with the gear model. There is an easy solution to your tree height problem -just order folding rops on your tractor, fold it down whenever you need clearance, and drive carefully. Why do most people shy away from the JD445? Read my original posting again. A garden tractor is really just an expensive mower and is not VERSATILE like a 4wd compact diesel tractor. It will depreciate far more, and will not give you the years of service that a compact will. I wouldn't go any smaller than a BX for any purchase. Keep in mind that if you want to use your 3 point hitch, that the JD4100 and TC-18/21 have position control on the 3 point and the BX and B-7500 Kubotas do not. Just try them out to see what a worthwhile thing position control is for using implements

Eric, I have a 4100 gear with about 75 hours of variable types of use. I have never had any problems with the transmission. It's a typical collarshift -stop -shift -go.

Well, I thought I would get back to everyone with my info regarding Great Bend loaders. I have a great JD dealer. He made a trip to my house today with a JD4100 with a Great Bend loader installed (he trailered it 125 miles) so that I could see the install and test performance. The GB220 loader is very well constructed and works well with the 4100. Construction seems very durable, lift and dump times are fast. Fits quite well on the tractor too-doesn't seem like the mismatch I have observed on other aftermarket loaders. BUT, LOOKS LIKE I WILL BE BUYING A JD 410 LOADER INSTEAD, EVEN IF IT DOES COST $600 MORE. MAJOR BUMMER- THE GREAT BEND SUBFRAME MOUNTS TO THE SAME FRAME LOCATION AS MY MID-MOUNT MOWER LINKAGE AND IT IS SIMPLY INCOMPATABLE WITH THE MOWER. I don't mind removing the loader to install the mower deck, but I'm not going to pull the subframe and retorque bolts every time I need to switch. The 410 loader can actually be used along with the mower deck installed (not that I would do this-but the subframe is compatable with the mower set-up). For anyone who doesn't need to use a mid-mount mower, I would recommend the GB loader as a very suitable and economical loader choice.

Rick, just let your use be your guide. I never use 4wd while mowing or crossing turf, due to potential for tearing up the lawn. I never use it on paved surfaces. Otherwise, 4wd improves performance on just about any other use I can think of.

Keith, the pin to pin clearance width on my attachments varies. I have lots of toys. Some worked fine, but others rubbed the tires when transporting in the fully raised position, due to the small amount of unavoidable sway. The worst problem I had was on my 3-point dirt scoop. I corresponded with JD factory rep and was told the best way to eliminate the problem was to reverse the rear wheels. I did this and now have no clearance problems with any implement. I found that I also prefer the wider stance due to the increased overall stability and the additional room to hook up implements. I think that overall I gained maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inches on each side of additional clearance (3 to 4 inches overall width).

The only thing I can think of is a mower-bagger system. But the price of these-OUCH!!! I priced them and then just bought a push mower with a bagger since leaves and pine needles only need be collected once or twice a year. There is an item called a pinestraw rake, made by Leinbach Manuafacturing that I have considered (only $150). That company is located in Winston-Salem NC.

I'll try to address some of your questions. Some good boxblade are made by: Landpride, Monroe Toughline, Bushhog, Rhino, Woods, and lots more. Buy the heaviest blade you can afford, they work better and last longer. For the money, I've had good luck with the Landpride equipment. Usually you should buy a blade that is about the same width as your rear wheels (or a bit wider). I don't believe you can extend your axles, but most of us reverse our rear wheels so that the tractor has a wider stance. Most people use a good heavy box blade for rear ballast when using a loader, but it depends on how heavy the material is in your front bucket. Most box blades only weigh 400-600 pounds, and you may need to use something else for rear ballast if you are moving very heavy material in your loader. Liquid filling rear tires or using wheel weights are another way to add weight. Some people add weight to the box blade or use a carryall with weight. Of course, there is also the ballast box which is designed for this purpose. Lots of options. The loader is excellant front end ballest for using rear implements. Also, if you should need more front end weight than the loader and frame provide, then you could just pick up a bucket of something to add weight.

I've been considering the purchase of a Great Bend 220 loader for my JD4100. The specs seem to be the same as the JD 410 loader, but the price is $500 less. I will be using the original JD SCV valve and joystick that was factory installed. My dealer tells me that even though he's a Deere dealer, he sells a lot of Great Bend loaders due to price. According to him, he's had no quality complaints, and the only real difference is that the JD loader detatches a little quicker with pins, while the Great Bend requires the removal of 2 bolts. Great Bend is a subsidiary of Bush Hog company. Any thoughts on this? Anyone have a Great Bend loader?

I don't know what it would take to pull it, but the pasture renovator made by Monroe tufline looks like it would really work well. Maybe a narrow width model could be pulled by a 40 HP tractor.

Cliff, a lot depends upon your use. I have a 5' blade for my JD4100 (20HP), and I wouldn't want a 6 footer. Not because I'm concerned about power. I think it would pull just fine. But the 5 footer rotates full circle around the hitch and doesn'i rub anything. I could not do this with a 6 footer. Also, I found that for some of the angle chores like ditching, more length tends to get in the way. However, plowing snow or grading gravel is of course easier to do with a longer blade.

Steve, You are probably going to have to look a lot to find something in that price range. I know, I was looking in that range last year myself (ended up at double that price). Nevertheless, I have seen tractors in that range occassionally. I've seen some pretty good deals on Ebay and elsewhere. I would recommend that you don't compromise and buy a lesser or off-brand to save money. You are far better off to buy an older Deere, Kubota, Ford or Massey than to go with the unreliable Chinese stuff or other off-brands. I would also recommend that you not compromise on 4 wheel drive. On these compacts, 4 wd is almost essential if you want any work versatility. Keep in mind that it is sometimes difficult to find a mid-mount mower deck for an older tractor model, but you can always get a 3 point mount rear mower which will fit any tractor.

I often use other implements with the mid-mount mower attached. Especially since I bought a mower lift latch kit (it can lock the mower in the raised position while the 3 point can be used to raise or lower an implement). The only problem is what you mentioned -sometimes I have ground clearance problems with the mower attached and then I will remove the mowing deck.

A very good reason for the electoral college is illustrated by considering what would be the result of election by popular vote. If the presidency was decided by popular vote, does anybody think that candidates would campaign (or govern) on any issues which are not important to New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas and Chicago? Would canditates even visit or care about the rural or suburban areas of our country? I think not. Really under a popular vote a candidate could promise the moon to California, New York and Texas and snub his nose at the rest of the country, BUT HE WOULD PROBABLY BE ELECTED under this system. I'm completely oppossed to such a senario. The electoral college can be compared to the world series. It's not the total number of runs scored throughout the season, but the total number of games (states) won that determine the winner. The founding statesmen designed the electoral college to prohibit the complete domination of the nation by a few of the powerful states. Seems to me that this reason is just as valid today as it was then.

One factor to consider. I didn't purchase a loader with my tractor since I was tapped out money-wise and I'm currently getting by with a cheap rear scoop. Works OK but still want a loader someday. But if you go this route, then make sure you order the tractor with the loader hydraulic valves factory installed. I spent the extra $ for this, because the dealers tend to charge a bundle to install these later on. If you have the SCV installed at the time of purchase, then it is easy to install a loader at any time and it will really be no different cost-wise than if you bought the loader initially (except for a few hours of labor). If the hydraulic values are in, you can even install the loader yourself.

Use either pea gravel, coarse sand, or cinders. Spread about 4" thick and you will not have any mud problems around the barn.
